When I add a song to my iTunes, does it make a duplicate somewhere else?

I used to have a Macbook, and when I'd add a mp3 to iTunes it would
make a duplicate in another iTunes folder.
I was able to delete the original mp3.

Is this the same thing for windows? I noticed that when I move the mp3
file it won't recognize it in iTunes anymore.
