Jim Sturgess on for Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas
He's currently breaking Anne Hathaway's heart over the course of 20 years in One Day, and Jim Sturgess has now joined the adaptation of Cloud Atlas. The novel is one of a countless number tagged 'unfilmable' over the years, but it looks like the the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer (Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer, Run Lola Run) are going to give it a damned good go.The cast already includes Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Plotwise, Cloud Atlas follows six interconnected stories from the 19th Century to the far-flung future. It's understood that the Wachowskis will be tackling the future-set sections while Tykwer simultaneously oversees the period pieces, in what's expected to be one of the most expensive German-funded movies ever.Sturgess, who hasn't yet broken into the mainstream like one might have predicted, spoke to The Playlist about Cloud Atlas:"lt's an amazing book... You really gotta stick with it...because when it all starts falling into place it's pretty amazing."[All the actors] play a few characters, it's very clever what [the directors are] gonna try and do. I'm really really really excited about it."I think it's going to be bonkers, it's either going to work or it's not. I'm really excited to see if we can pull it off, because it's ambitious what they want to do."And it's nice, you feel like no one's ever done that in a film before, it's like rep theater on a sort of giant movie scale."Cloud Atlas is expected to open late in 2012.
Andrew Garfield Says Fame 'Terrifies' Him and Emma Stone Is 'A Gift'
Although he's landed the lead in 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' Andrew Garfield is still relatively unknown. Oh sure, every geek on the planet knows who he is, but do their moms? All too soon, though, his fame will be unavoidable. As the LA Times points out to the actor in a new interview, he'll soon be an action figure and "on billboards, Slurpee cups, and magazine covers everywhere." How is Garfield preparing for this massive surge of attention? "I don't like to think about it. It terrifies me," he told the Times. "I just saw that I was given an opportunity to play a part that I've been wanting to play since I was a 2-year-old. I don't want the rest of it. The visibility thing ... was the one thing that deterred me." He swears he'll still be the same old Andrew, but is that possible with paparazzi everywhere? (It doesn't help that he's dating his co-star, Emma Stone.) "Of course this comes with a certain life change," Garfield noted, "but I'm going to do everything in my power to hold on to what's important... I did take the role, I took it on, and I don't regret it. It's meant something to me for all of my life. But I'm going to do my best to remain me." Speaking of Stone, Garfield also gushed about how wonderful she is. Word of advice, hon: The best way to keep the media out of your love life is by not talking about it. Garfield on Stone: She's the best. She's very talented and I knew that going in. I didn't know how nice she was going to be and how funny and how sweet and how generous she was going to be as a human being. She's the kind of girl who brings cupcakes in for the crew and doesn't tell them that they are from her. She really wanted to get under the skin of the character and make something authentic and real. She's playful and fun and silly and constantly helped me to stay in a place where I didn't take things too seriously. That's important for me because I'm pretty serious as a person. It gets on my nerves how serious I can be. So she was a real gift. This interview was presumably conducted before Jim Carrey's odd love declaration that he also thinks Emma Stone is pretty amazing. (The comedian later tweeted that the post was "a comedy routine.") And here we'll just stop to ponder Carrey's attention-seeking stunt (which totally worked since it crashed his site) versus Garfield's quest for continued anonymity. Pic history embraces 'Three'-peat
Paul W.S. Anderson sees "The Three Musketeers" as the perfect brand, a classic on which each generation gets to produce its own take. He and his producer Jeremy Bolt credit their defining intro to the Musketeers to Richard Lester's signature "The Three Musketeers" and its sequel "The Four Musketeers," while younger generations may more readily identify with the 1993 Disney version starring Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. In fact, countless variations abound, with the Musketeers already there at the beginning of film history, clocking in with their first version in France in 1903. By 1929, Douglas Fairbanks' iconic swashbuckler was already version number four. The first sound version was appropriately in French, "Les Trois Mousquetaires" (1932) with Edith Mera as Milady de Winter, billed as "une aventuriere sans foi ni loi" (a godless and lawless adventuress). Arguably the deadliest -- looking, if nothing else -- would be Lana Turner's Milady in MGM's 1948 Technicolor extravaganza starring an acrobatic Gene Kelly, and featuring a very evil Vincent Price.Inevitably, our heroes were ripe for comedy. The Ritz Bros. kicked it off in 1939 for Fox, followed by a 1942 Mexican comedy starring Cantinflas, and in the '70s the French comedy quartet, the 4 Charlots, provided the laughs for two films. And of course Mickey, Donald and Goofy got in their licks. In 1928, the Musketeers conquered Broadway in a Ziegfeld-produced stage musical, which later led to TV tuners made by the Russians in 1978 and 1993, and the Dutch in 2003.And yes, there's even the inevitable '70s softcore porn version, "The Sex Adventures of the Three Musketeers," from West Germany. And as if to redress the karmic balance, we have "Barbie and the Three Musketeers" (2009), whose battle cry is "Don't mess with the dress!" As D'Artagnan's daughter Corinne, Barbie wants to become the first female musketeer, but hers is only one of four distaff Musketeer films. And none of this counts the many transpositions of the characters that have to include "The Three Shaolin Musketeers," the Spaghetti Western adventure "Zorro and the Three Musketeers," the B-movie Western "The Three Mesquiteers," Tom and Jerry in "The Two Mouseketeers" plus a 1933 serial, which morphed our Musketeers to the French Foreign Legion, starring a young John Wayne. And how about "The Ring of the Musketeers" (1992) that, starring David Hasselhof, Thomas Gottschalk and Cheech Marin, must surely count as the horror version. Which begs the question, where's the Roger Corman sci-fi version? It must be out there somewhere. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

TCA: This 'Gentleman' Prefers Leslie Moonves
Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. It may have generated the single-biggest laugh of TCA to date this afternoon when David Hornsby, the creator, executive producer and star of the new CBS comedy How to Be a Gentleman, was asked his personal idea of the perfect gentleman. The questioner wondered: Was it Pierce Brosnan as James Bond? Perhaps Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird? No."Leslie Moonves," Hornsby replied. The room roared. Moonves himself was unavailable for comment. Hornsby allowed that Cary Grant and George Clooney also might be good choices along with that of the president and CEO of CBS Corp. Series co-star Dave Foley also added his own somewhat surprising choices: Henry Winkler and John Ritter. An even more irreverent exchange came during the panel when Gentleman castmate and former 24 regular Mary Lynn Rajskub responded to a question about whether she had the sense that her 24 character Chloe would be a part of the planned feature film based on the adrenalin-rich Fox drama. "Yeah, do you?" Rajskub replied. "I hope so. It'll be either me or Rachel Weisz." After a few more wisecracks, mostly under her breath, Rajskub asked, "Should I have answered that differently? OK, I'm rewriting the script myself, how about that?"
